The investment will support employment and clean-up initiatives in the wake of Typhoon Mawar.
The U.S. Department of Labor announced an initial funding award of $4.5 million to support the cleanup and recovery efforts in Guam following the devastating impact of Typhoon Mawar in May 2023. Administered by the Employment and Training Administration, the National Dislocated Worker Grant, with a total distribution of up to $11 million, will be used by the Guam Department of Administration “to provide people with temporary employment removing debris and delivering humanitarian assistance to those the storm affected.”
Typhoon Mawar, a Category 4 storm, struck Guam’s northern tip and intersected the island, which resulted in severe flooding and winds reaching 140 miles per hour. The storm caused widespread power outages and disrupted the water supply. Following the issuing of a major disaster declaration by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Guam became eligible for this funding.
These grants, supported by the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, are intended to support the capabilities of dislocated worker programs at the state and local levels, offering financial assistance in response to significant job losses caused by unforeseen economic events.
